Norwell 35

More on the Knight's loss to Columbia City

Norwell had jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, only to watch Columbia City bounce back to go ahead 5-4 and then hold the ball for the last shot of the first quarter.

Tim Briggs scored on a slash through the lane with five seconds remaining. Hicks probably could have lived with that.

But Briggs immediately intercepted a careless Norwell inbounds pass and was fouled with one second left. He flipped in both free tosses, and then Columbia City started the second quarter with possession.

Jake Smith drilled a three-pointer from the left wing just 19 seconds into the period, and suddenly a 5-4 game had ballooned to 12-4.

Norwell turned it right back over to the Eagles, and Briggs dropped another three to open a 15-4 spread.

During that 15-0 Columbia City run, Norwell went exactly eight minutes without scoring, missing five shots and committing four turnovers during that span.

Ouch.

Jordan Moss stripped Jordan Foughty of the ball near midcourt and headed in for a layup while being fouled by Klay Fiechter.

And when McGrew slammed the ball down to the floor in frustration, he earned a technical foul.

Moss completed the three-point play, Stittler canned both technical free throws, and Columbia City was awarded the ball out of bounds with a 32-22 lead.

The Eagles didn't convert that possession, Ryne Otis intercepting yet another nonchalant Columbia City pass and sailing in for a layup. But those would be the last Norwell points in over six minutes.

Starting with that five-point possession, Columbia City outscored the dispirited Knights, 18-2, to grab a 45-24 lead, as Norwell missed its first seven shots of the fourth quarter while turning it over three times.

Double Ouch.
