Knights win share in NHC

Way to go Norwell!  The Knights tromped on Homestead to bring home a share of the NHC Conference Title.

In the end, it was Brandon Gerber's game-high 20 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, that turned it Norwell's way. It was a couple of big rebound buckets and a critical forced turnover down the stretch by Klay Fiechter. It was five free throws in the last 43 seconds by Jordan Shady, Kyle Fillman and Gerber.

"These guys fought and fought and fought, and Homestead did, too. It wasn't safe until the final horn," Hawkins said.

The Knights finished this season 15-5 and head into the sectional against Maconaquah (8-11) on March 2nd.

The Hawaiian Reservation

I've always considered the Native American reservation system to be a rather horrible compromise between freedom and progress that grew out of the times.  But out in Hawaii, native polynesian's are looking a multi-billion dollar windfall of a compromise in the face.  The Hawaiian legislators are working to pass a bill that would, however you want to say it, form a new reservation system for Native American's in Hawaii.

The bill would grant federal recognition to Native Hawaiians, allowing them to form their own sovereign government similar to American Indians and Native Alaskans, giving them the power to negotiate over land use and cultural preservation. It would instantly create the second largest native "tribe" in the United States with almost 400,000 members -- including roughly 20 percent of Hawaii's residents based solely on their Polynesian heritage. 

But many say the bill's biggest impact lies in the amount of 'ceded' lands the state and federal government may be required to transfer to the new Hawaiian nation. About 1.8 million acres were 'ceded' when Hawaii became a state. Some of those lands are expected to be returned to the native Hawaiians under the Akaka bill.

From what I understand, if this bill passes then anyone with ancestral ties to the native Polynesians who were in Hawaii before 1893 (when Queen Liliuokalani's kingdom fell) would be able to form their own government and govern themselves... and this new "reservation" would own about 25% of the Hawaiian islands.  The reservation systems we know on the mainland grew out of presidential executive orders forcing Indians onto land nobody wanted... this Hawaiian deal is the exact opposite, with the U.S. government freeing her own citizens from her sovereignty and giving them land everybody wants.

Once again, this appears to be an instance of the minority controlling the majority since only 35% of Hawaiian's want this bill to pass.

Illinois: Coming to a state near you

Illinois is in worse fiscal shape than California and has only one third the population.  Politicians at the State and Federal levels have been promising everything to everybody for years and it's coming time to pay the piper.  The time is coming, and may be here, when "the State" no longer has the money for the functions it's supposed to perform because all the money is going to retirees and schools.  Firemen?  Police?  Sewer and Water and Garbage? -- go ask the teacher's unions for those services.  Go ask all the state-funded workers who took 20 years and out.

For a few magic beans

After all the uproar about bribing Nebraska and Louisiana and Florida and the Unions to sign on to the Health Care bill, the President has decided to just give those gifts to everyone in his new plan... taking it on to the federal government to pay most of the State's medicare bills up through 2020 and not taxing anyone's Cadillac health care plans until 2018.

Now the President's EPA is pulling the same stunt with the regulation of carbon. Faced with a Congress upset that the EPA might just tax us into depression, the EPA says, not to worry, they won't start regulating until down the road, maybe after 2016, perhaps.

So in the future, sometime after the President is long gone from office, the states are agreeing to balloon taxes to pay for our health care, balloon taxes to pay for federal and state worker pensions and balloon taxes to pay for the regulation of energy.

I'm starting to feel like an indentured servant, signing away my future freedom for free passage today. Or even worse, selling my kids into slavery for a few magic beans.

Gov. Schwarzenegger and the Tea Partiers

Governor Schwarzenegger just said on "This Week, "The Tea Party's not going to go anywhere, it's just an expression of anger and dissatisfaction."  He went on to say that people are angry at their leaders all over the world due to the economy and Obama should just keep on track.

He's right, the Tea Party isn't going anywhere, it's the politicians in Washington who have to go. He seems to believe that the "Tea Party" is angling to become a third party where I think most "Tea Partiers" don't want to form a party, they want to chose candidates who will stop growing the government and start shrinking it.

How to fake Global Warming

1. Examine data from 6000 different weather reporting stations around the globe
2. Only pay attention to the warmest weather reporting stations

Joseph D'Aleo, the first director of meteorology and co-founder of the Weather Channel, and Anthony Watts, a meteorologist and founder of SurfaceStations.org, are well-known and well-respected scientists. On Jan. 29, they released a startling study showing that starting in 1990, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) began systematically eliminating climate-measuring stations in cooler locations around the world. Eliminating stations that tended to record cooler temperatures drove up the average measured temperature. The stations eliminated were in higher latitudes and altitudes, inland areas away from the sea and more rural locations. The drop in the number of weather stations was dramatic, declining from more than 6,000 stations to fewer than 1,500.

Mr. D'Aleo and Mr. Watts provide some amazing graphs showing that the jumps in measured global temperature occurred just when the number of weather stations was cut. But there is another bias that this change to more urban stations also exacerbates. Recorded temperatures in more urban areas rise over time simply because more densely populated areas produce more heat. Combining the greater share of weather stations in more urban areas over time with this urban heat effect also tends to increase the rate that recorded temperatures tend to rise over time.

Notice in the graph how the increase in global temperature coincides with the decrease in the number of weather reporting stations.

Are the Feds Chasing Toyota Out?

Is the US Government trying to chase Toyota out of the country because they are not unionized?  And since the US Government is part owner of GM, isn't it a conflict of interest for Congress to browbeat and bad-mouth Toyota?

In fact, the differences in efficiency and productivity (and why the unions are determined to penetrate Toyota's workforce), do not stop there. When GM fired over 35,000 employees between 2006 and 2008, Toyota laid off zero. GM loses almost $2,500 in profitability per vehicle where Toyota makes almost $1,500 per vehicle. This is largely due to GM's forced union contracts. GM's union, the United Auto Workers (UAW) mandates that GM pay, on average, each non-skilled line worker about $33 dollars per hour. This inflated wage includes workers who are "idle," meaning they don't have a specific job that day, but can still come to work, sit in a special facility and collect a pay check.

These artificially inflated costs, bound by forced union contracts, are sinking other US auto industries. Toyota has managed to rise above that, not by being anti-union, but by believing in and enforcing a corporate-wide model based on efficiency and improvement.

Now, the agents of the government, which controls GM, are publicly castigating Toyota in an attempt to smear the company and increase their own profitability. As a direct competitor with Toyota by way of involvement with GM, the assault against Toyota represents one of the most public conflicts of interests the business world has experienced.

Norwell Boys are 12-5

The Lady Knights ended their season 21-1, but the boys are still moving along quite well. With three regular season games to go, the boys are 12-5 on the season and 5-1 in the Conference.  The last game of the season will be against Homestead and may decide the Conference Championship.

The new deficit commission would do the country a big favor if it would put out a statement saying that there's nothing more needed than a huge cutback in spending, and a determined program to begin paying off the national debt. It should then recommended to the American people that, when they go to the polls, they send only men and women who realize the horrendous predicament the nation is now in and who plan to do what is so sorely needed.
 
After doing this, the deficit commission personnel should resign.  Who needs a commission to discover that the nation is in a fiscal crisis?

Philadelphia Transportation Security Administration screeners are out of control

The boy's father broke down the stroller and put it on the conveyor belt as Leona Thomas walked Ryan through the metal detector.

The alarm went off.

The screener told them to take off the boy's braces.

The Thomases were dumbfounded. "I told them he can't walk without them on his own," Bob Thomas said.

"He said, 'He'll need to take them off.' "

Ryan's mother offered to walk him through the detector after they removed the braces, which are custom-made of metal and hardened plastic.

No, the screener replied. The boy had to walk on his own.

Leona Thomas said she was calm. Bob Thomas said he was starting to burn.

They complied, and Leona went first, followed by Ryan, followed by Bob, so the boy wouldn't be hurt if he fell. Ryan made it through.

By then, Bob Thomas was furious. He demanded to see a supervisor. The supervisor asked what was wrong.

"I told him, 'This is overkill. He's 4 years old. I don't think he's a terrorist.' "

The supervisor replied, "You know why we're doing this," Thomas said.

 

TSA said, after a review, they didn't have to remove his braces, he should have been taken aside and swabbed for explosives.  Come on!  Just how many disabled four-year-old terrorists do they thing are out there?

Norwell Girls fall to Elmhurst

A packed house watched the Elmhurst-Norwell game, and fans more than received their money's worth. It was 34-34 at halftime; Norwell edged ahead in the third and pushed its lead to 54-46 early in the fourth quarter. Two old-fashioned three-point plays by TeSharra Thomas and Gorman closed the gap, and Elmhurst took a 55-54 lead on an inside bucket by Liza Clemons after Norwell's center Jessica Rupright had fouled out of the game.

The lead changed hands four more times, with Norwell taking its last lead, 63-61 on a free throw by freshman guard Taylor Wilson with 46 seconds left.

Gorman then made the biggest play of the game for Elmhurst, driving coast-to-coast and completing a three-point play for a 64-63 lead with 39 seconds left.

Norwell called timeout with 20 seconds left and set up its offense for senior Jenelle Wilson to drive the lane. She made a great move, but her layup attempt fell off the rim. She then fouled out, sending Clemons to the line. Clemons hit two free throws to make it 66-63.

[Norwell Coach] Thornton praised his team's effort, but pointed to 17 missed free throws (hitting 21 of 38) as a determining factor.

"We needed to make a few more free throws," he said. "We just couldn't put a couple in back-to-back and it cost us. …We put ourselves in position to win the game. As I told them, you can't look back. You can't play the 'what if,' game and that's hard to tell the kids. We played well enough to win the game."

Norwell finishes the season 21-1. The Knights were led by Jenelle Wilson's 17 points. Amanda McAfee scored 15 points with 12 rebounds, Taylor Wilson scored 12 points and Caitlyn McGrew scored 10.

Great season, girls!  I've always heard that the best officials are invisible to the game... it's a shame (for both teams) that the officiating determined who the coaches could play in this game.  Sometimes officials should just let the teams play.

Bayh Retires at last second

Bayh's retirement also sets up a very confusing situation

because it comes just 24 hours from the registration deadline for statewide candidates! While Indiana's filing deadline is on Friday, Senate candidates need to deposit 500 signatures from each of the state's nine congressional districts by noon tomorrow to qualify for the fall ballot.

The twist: If no Democrat whatsoever has qualified, party officials can appoint a replacement for that vacancy. This should be the party's saving grace since it is virtually impossible for anyone to collect 4,500 signatures within the next 24 hours. The first question, then, is whether any Democrat who was already running can qualify for the ballot by tomorrow. It looks like only one person was planning a challenge to Bayh: Tamyra d'Ippolito, who entered the race as a progressive critic of the senator. Just three days ago, d'Ippolito said she was 1,000 signatures short. If she finds them by tomorrow, Democrats need to either stick with her or convince her to withdraw; if she fails, a party committee made of up 32 Democratic officials (ethnic caucus leaders, county leaders) will get to choose a replacement who could bypass a primary.

So Senator Bayh bows out almost too late for anyone but the Democrat Party itself to chose his replacement -- handy for them... wouldn't want "the people" to decide who should run.

Global Warming: Expensive Lies

Professor Phil Jones of the University of East Anglia as admitted there has been no warming of the planet for the last 15 years.  Jones has admitted that he is not very good at keeping data tidily. And that, in a scientist, is a startling omission. Jones had not managed the most basic task of anyone compiling a temperature record. He had not kept, in good order, the data on which the record was based.

Fort Wayne Foundry Columbia City is closing their doors after GM moves the work to Mexico.  Hey, nice bailout!

General Motors Co., the recipient of a taxpayer bailout, is moving the work they do to Mexico, they said.

"I feel betrayed that the taxpayers bailed out GM, and GM is sending jobs to Mexico," said Dave Moore, vice president of United Auto Workers Local 2242, which represents employees of the foundry.

NASA Launches Solar Dynamics Observatory

NASA has lunched the SDO into geosynchronous orbit, 22,000 miles above the Earth.  The Solar Dynamics Observatory will measure the Sun's magnetic activity and try to reveal more about how the Sun works.

"The depth of the solar minimum in 2008-2009 really took us by surprise," says sunspot expert David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. "It highlights how far we still have to go to successfully forecast solar activity."

That's a problem, because human society is increasingly vulnerable to solar flare ups. Modern people depend on a network of interconnected high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. Smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services, emergency radio communications-they can all be knocked out by intense solar activity. According to a 2008 study by the National Academy of Sciences, a century-class solar storm could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina.

"Understanding solar variability is crucial," says space scientist Judith Lean of the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC. "Our modern way of life depends upon it."

Not to mention the effects of the Sun on the Earth's climate.

If the weather allows, the 20-0 Lady Knights will face the 14-6 Peru Tigers on Tuesday and then the 16-4 Elmhurst Trojans on Friday.  The Norwell girls won previous sectionals in 2005, 1996, 1984, 1982 and, of course, in 1976 and 1977 (which is and always was as it should be).

We're Hard to Govern -- on Purpose

America is Not Ungovernable, our founding fathers designed our nation this way

The solution the country ultimately settled on had five important features: checks and balances so that the branches would police one another; a large republic so that majority sentiment was fleeting and not intensely felt; a Senate where the states would be equal; enumerated congressional powers to limit the scope of governmental authority; and the Bill of Rights to offer extra protection against the government.

The end result was a government that is powerful, but not infinitely so. Additionally, it is schizophrenic. It can do great things when it is of a single mind - but quite often it is not of one mind. So, to govern, our leaders need to build a broad consensus. When there is no such consensus, the most likely outcome is that the government will do nothing.

The President's two major initiatives - cap-and-trade and health care - have failed because there was not a broad consensus to enact them. Our system is heavily biased against such proposals. That's a good thing.

Update: Fox News reports on President Obama planning yet another new agency -- this one to study the climate... and not one word of any of the above information is mentioned. Why? Why would America's taxpayers _need_ a new agency to study the climate when we already have NASA _and_ the NOAA?

Obama's of two minds: he's a little league fiscal conservative toeing the plate in his State of the Union address against a Nolan Ryan leftist staring in from the mound. Even if he ever hits the ball he'll stay at the plate shaking his stinging hands.

Obamas Bounce

I left out the possessive apostrophe in the title on purpose.  The President's approval ratings bounced higher after he was all fiscally conservative in his State of the Union Address... but then he released his gigantic budget and he finds himself in free-fall.... Do Obamas Bounce?

This past Sunday reports about the President's budget began to leak out. On Monday, the budget was officially released, and voters saw that all of the pretty fiduciary responsibility talk within the SOTU was just that, talk. With that Obama's approval numbers dived faster than a congressman rushing to spend our last dollar. Each one of his approval numbers are now worse than they were the day of the State Of the Union.

For my own reference, so I can look back on some future date and compare what actually happens to what was projected.

You spent $6,000 today

Yes you did.... and your spouse spent another $6,000 and each of your kids spent $6,000 and each of your parents, as well.  Even though every one of you is deep in debt already, you all went ahead and dug the hole deeper.  Not one Republican Senator and not one Republican Congressperson voted to increase our debt by $1.9 Trillion -- but those who did vote for it blamed Republicans and not President Obama's coming 3.7 Trillion dollar budget (3.7 Trillion is the optimistic version of the alternate reality that is Washington D.C., it will be much, much larger).

For those who say, the Republicans did the same, that doesn't make it right.  Throw them all out!

Two Futures

Rep. Paul Ryan, (R., Wis.), the ranking member of the House Budget Committee:

President Obama's budget "is not like most budgets, with some tax-code tinkering and spending." No, he says, "this budget is a choice. We are about to make a decision whose consequences will last for generations."

"This budget presents a choice of two futures," Ryan says. "Don't look at the president's rhetoric, look at his actions. His substance implies a different reality. Not only is this budget worse than the last one, but it triples our debt within ten years, features gushers of tax increases, and relies on some partisan commission to do the heavy lifting on fiscal policy after the next election. Make no mistake: This is a budget aimed to advance the administration's philosophy and ideology. By increasing taxes and letting the country spiral into debt, this budget is a firm step toward transforming America into a collectivist society overseen by a social-welfare state."

This is the same Paul Ryan who President Obama singled out during his meeting with Republicans the other day as having ideas worthy of discussion.  The President's budget is just really, really "out there" -- going in the opposite direction by far from what most Americans want.

I guess we just don't understand & need to have it made more clear to us.

Just who did we elect, and for what?

The President is creating a commission -- more money spent on more unelected "officials" reporting to the Executive Branch -- to bring fiscal responsibility to America. In the same breath, his budget is "terrifying" in size and scope.

Under the path laid out by the president, absent the work of the fiscal commission, the national debt is set to rise to a staggering 77 percent of the economy by 2020. That year, interest payments on the debt alone will be $840 billion; by way of comparison, all non security discretionary spending in 2020 is estimated to be $537 billion. And these terrifying numbers reflect the optimistic scenario.

The President is trying again this year to take money from charities, planning to pull in $300 billion to the Federal Government by reducing charitable deductions and mortgage deductions. He's assuming another $150 billion in savings on health care despite the health care fiasco on the ground at his feet.

Our elected officials see themselves between a rock and a hard place, they think they will lose their jobs if they cut spending because spending is how they keep their jobs today. Neither party deserves to remain. It has been clear for a long time that Social Security and Medicaid have to be cut. It has been clear for a long time that states cannot continue to spend half their budget on education and the other half on government worker pensions. The power of the Tea Partiers is that none of this bribery will work on them.... for the most part, Tea Partiers are Eliot Ness to the current gangster-filled political landscape. Money bombs are falling all around the looters in Congress and they'll be replaced by people who don't intend to make their career through bribery.

Knights take 4th NHC crown in a row

Norwell came into this game without the services of two starters due to injury: Rupright (strained hamstring) and Alyssa Smith (torn ACL).

Yet, just as the Knights motto has been all year — “Next man up” — up to the occasion rose junior Amanda McAfee. McAfee caught fire in the second quarter, scoring nine of Norwell’s 14 points, including two free throws at the end of the half to give them a 26-25 lead.

“Amanda was just relentless tonight,” said Thornton. “She was all over the glass, she was looking to score, and she gave us the nice inside outside game we needed.”

And so deeply entrenched is the global warming lobby, the prestigious journal Science did not publish a letter that Dr Peiser wrote pointing out the lack of consensus.
